A growing debate has emerged within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), with sections of party members expressing differing views on who is best placed to steer the party following the leadership transition after Raila Odinga.
Some party members have voiced support for Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, arguing that he demonstrated capable leadership when he served as acting party leader during Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) campaign. They contend that Raila’s decision to entrust Nyong’o with the party’s affairs at that time reflected significant confidence in his leadership.
Others have rallied behind Oburu Oginga, who was appointed to a senior leadership role following the transition. Supporters describe Oburu as a veteran politician with deep roots in the party and the Odinga family’s political legacy, saying his experience is essential in maintaining unity within ODM.
The differing opinions have also exposed ideological differences within the party. Nyong’o has previously expressed reservations about ODM’s full participation in the Kenya Kwanza broad-based government, a position that has resonated with members who prefer the party to maintain a stronger opposition identity. In contrast, Oburu has generally been viewed as more supportive of the cooperation arrangement with the government.
Political analysts note that the debate is less about personalities and more about ODM’s future direction ahead of the 2027 General Election. One camp favors a more independent opposition stance, while another believes cooperation with the government offers opportunities to influence national policy.
Experts caution, however, that claims about who is “stronger” or who Raila Odinga personally preferred as a long-term successor remain speculative unless supported by public statements or official party decisions. They argue that ODM’s leadership will ultimately be determined through the party’s constitutional processes rather than public opinion or internal lobbying.
As political realignments gather momentum ahead of 2027, the leadership question within ODM is expected to remain a key issue, with observers watching closely to see whether the party can manage internal differences while preserving its unity and electoral strength.
