KITHOKO VILLAGE, MACHAKOS COUNTY — President William Ruto has presided over the launch of a 33.13-kilometre Kagonde–Masinga–Kithyoko Road project and the flag-off of materials for electricity connectivity projects targeting households in Masinga Constituency.

The two initiatives are aimed at improving transport infrastructure and expanding access to electricity, with the government positioning both as key drivers of economic growth and improved livelihoods.

The Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP) projects, to be implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), are valued at KSh 29.89 million. They are expected to connect 200 households in Masaku and Gembeni villages to electricity.

The road project is expected to improve connectivity between communities, making it easier for farmers, traders and other residents to access markets and essential services.

Across Machakos County, the wider Kenya Power–REREC Last Mile Connectivity Programme represents an estimated cumulative investment of KSh 5.54 billion, targeting 52,862 households.

The investments are intended to strengthen the link between infrastructure development and economic opportunity. Improved roads can ease the movement of agricultural produce and goods, while electricity can support small businesses, schools, health facilities and other community services.

For households and entrepreneurs, access to reliable power can also create opportunities to adopt new technologies, extend business operating hours and develop income-generating activities.

The government says the projects form part of its broader development agenda aimed at expanding essential services and connecting communities to economic opportunities.

As implementation progresses, residents will look to the delivery of the projects to determine how the investments translate into improved access, business opportunities and better living conditions.
