NPA HAILS KAKAMEGA HIGH’S RISING SPORTS STARS, CALLS FOR SCHOOL TO BE MADE A NATIONAL SPORTS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The National Parents Association (NPA) has congratulated five students from Kakamega High School who have earned call-ups to the Harambee Junior Stars, urging parents and the government to fully embrace CBC by nurturing learners’ talents, skills and values.

The students were selected following their outstanding performances in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) competitions, highlighting the growing sporting potential within Kenya’s schools.

Speaking on the development, the NPA praised the students for putting their school and the country on the map, while commending Professor Aliva, Principal of Kakamega High School, for supporting the learners and creating an environment where talent can thrive.

The association urged parents to support the full implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), particularly its emphasis on identifying and developing learners’ talents, practical skills and values alongside academic achievement.

The Mr. Silas Obuhatsa , Chair,NPA also called on the government to provide greater support to Kakamega High School so that the students can receive opportunities that take them beyond what the Harambee Junior Stars platform can currently offer.

The association further appealed to President William Ruto to recognise Kakamega High School as a national centre of excellence for sports and consider establishing a dedicated sports academy at the institution to identify, nurture and develop young Kenyan sporting talent.

According to the NPA, investing in school sports infrastructure and structured talent development would give talented learners a stronger pathway from school competitions to professional and international sporting careers.

The five Kakamega High School students’ selection to the national junior team is being celebrated as a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when schools, parents and sports programmes work together to identify and nurture young talent.

The NPA says the achievement should now serve as a catalyst for increased investment in sports, talent development and skills-based education across the country.

“Kenya must not only celebrate talent when our young people reach the national stage. We must invest in the schools, facilities, coaches and programmes that help that talent get there.”
