By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Editor Construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has officially commenced in Kibos, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure and unlock the economic potential of the western region. The groundbreaking ceremony was witnessed by Kisumu Governor H.E. Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip J. Mainga, and Kisumu County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo, alongside national and county government officials, project partners, local leaders, and other stakeholders. The SGR extension is expected to transform transport and logistics by improving regional connectivity, facilitating trade, and driving economic growth across Western Kenya. During the construction phase, the project is projected to create thousands of employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and provide markets for construction materials and related services.
A key component of the project is the development of the Kibos Marshalling Yard, which will enhance cargo handling and freight movement. Kibos Station is also set to become the region’s central railway hub, improving passenger and cargo transport while strengthening links with neighbouring counties.
The railway extension is expected to complement operations at the Port of Kisumu and enhance trade through Lake Victoria by enabling faster and more efficient movement of goods from the Port of Mombasa to Western Kenya and neighbouring countries.
Leaders described the project as a transformative investment that will improve regional competitiveness, attract investment, and position Kisumu as a major logistics and commercial hub. They expressed confidence that the benefits of the railway will be felt by communities across the region for generations to come.
