By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Editor A fresh political confrontation has erupted between Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka over claims surrounding the Government's stake in Safaricom. CS Mbadi has dismissed assertions by Kalonzo that the Government secretly sold its stake in Safaricom, accusing him of misleading Kenyans with claims that do not reflect the Government's position.
The dispute follows concerns that the National Treasury proceeded with the disposal of the Government’s 15 percent stake to Vodacom shortly after conservatory orders were lifted, despite a constitutional petition challenging the transaction remaining pending before the High Court.
Critics argue that while the Court of Appeal lifted the conservatory orders, it did not determine the legality of the transaction, the adequacy of public participation, or whether the valuation represented value for taxpayers.
They contend that concluding the transaction before the High Court delivers its judgment raises serious questions about due process, transparency, and the protection of public assets.
Safaricom remains one of Kenya’s most strategic companies, playing a central role in the country’s digital economy.
The controversy has intensified political debate over accountability, public participation, and the management of national assets as Kenyans await the High Court’s determination on the constitutional issues raised in the case.
