NAIROBI RIVER COMMISSION LEADS LANDMARK URBAN RENEWAL PROGRAMME TO RESTORE RIVERS, CREATE JOBS AND BUILD A SUSTAINABLE NAIROBI

The Nairobi River Commission has emerged as a key institution driving one of Kenya’s most ambitious environmental and urban transformation initiatives through the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.
For decades, Nairobi’s rivers have suffered from pollution, encroachment, illegal waste dumping, and the discharge of untreated wastewater caused by rapid urbanization, population growth, industrial expansion, and the growth of informal settlements.
The degradation of these waterways has negatively affected public health, environmental sustainability, economic productivity, and the quality of life of communities living along river corridors.
In response, the Government of Kenya launched the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a comprehensive initiative aimed at restoring the ecological health of Nairobi’s rivers while promoting sustainable urban development, improved sanitation, climate resilience, and economic empowerment.
At the centre of this transformation is the Nairobi River Commission, which coordinates efforts among national and county governments, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations, and local communities to ensure successful implementation of the programme.
According to the Commission, river restoration goes beyond environmental conservation. It involves integrated investments in sanitation infrastructure, wastewater management, affordable housing, urban planning, flood mitigation, and community development.
Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the programme, with residents actively participating through public consultations, cleanup exercises, environmental awareness campaigns, and stakeholder forums designed to develop locally driven solutions.
Youth empowerment has also become a major pillar of the initiative. Through programmes such as Climate WorX, thousands of young people have been engaged in environmental conservation activities including river cleanups, waste collection, landscaping, and tree planting, creating employment opportunities while strengthening environmental stewardship.
Significant progress has already been achieved across the Nairobi River Basin. Large-scale cleanup operations have removed substantial volumes of waste from rivers and drainage channels, improving water flow, reducing pollution, and enhancing environmental quality.
The programme is also reclaiming and protecting riparian reserves that have been encroached upon over the years, helping to strengthen ecological integrity, improve flood resilience, and support sustainable land use planning.
To address long-standing sanitation challenges, major investments are underway in wastewater and sewer infrastructure. The construction of a trunk sewer system is expected to significantly reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater into rivers while expanding access to sanitation services for surrounding communities.
Urban renewal projects are also being implemented in key areas including Kamukunji Grounds and Gikomba Market, where improvements to drainage systems, sanitation facilities, accessibility infrastructure, and public spaces are creating cleaner, safer, and more functional environments.
The programme further supports social housing initiatives aimed at providing safe and dignified alternatives for families residing in high-risk flood-prone riparian areas. These interventions seek to improve access to housing, water, sanitation, roads, and other essential services.
The Nairobi River Commission notes that the regeneration programme is not only restoring rivers but also improving public health, creating employment opportunities, enhancing climate resilience, strengthening environmental sustainability, and revitalizing communities across the city.
As implementation continues, the Commission envisions a cleaner, greener, safer, and more resilient Nairobi built through sustained collaboration among government institutions, development partners, local communities, and the private sector.
