SAKAJA POISED TO MAKE HISTORY AS NAIROBI’S FIRST RE-ELECTED GOVERNOR

By News Desk

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is increasingly being viewed as a strong contender for a second term, with growing political discussions suggesting he could become the first Nairobi Governor to be re-elected since the introduction of devolution in 2013.

Since the establishment of county governments under the 2010 Constitution, Nairobi has witnessed a unique political trend where no sitting governor has successfully secured a second term. Dr. Evans Kidero served between 2013 and 2017 before losing his re-election bid, while Mike Sonko, elected in 2017, did not complete his term following his impeachment. Governor Johnson Sakaja, elected in 2022, now faces the opportunity to break what many political observers have described as Nairobi’s “one-term curse.”

Political analysts argue that Sakaja’s chances are strengthened by ongoing infrastructure projects, urban renewal programs, and his visibility in addressing key city challenges. Supporters claim that a significant percentage of Nairobi residents are willing to give him another term, citing improvements in service delivery and city management.

“Nairobi has never re-elected a governor since devolution began. If Sakaja secures a second term, he will write a new chapter in the county’s political history,” observers note.

As political alignments ahead of the next General Election begin to take shape, the Nairobi gubernatorial race is expected to attract intense competition from both established and emerging political figures. However, Sakaja’s supporters remain confident that the governor is well-positioned to overcome the historical trend that saw his predecessors leave office after a single term.

The coming months are likely to determine whether Nairobi voters will maintain their tradition of changing uh governors every election cycle or make history by granting Sakaja a second mandate.
