“Enough Is Enough”: Governors Led by Ahmed Abdullahi, Vow to Defy Senate, Accuse Senators of Extortion Rackets

By Jeff Kizzilah

A political storm is brewing after a group of governors openly threatened to snub the Senate’s accountability committee, accusing senators of harassment, intimidation, and extortion during oversight processes.Speaking during a governors’ retreat in Kilifi County, the county chiefs said they would no longer appear before the Senate committee until what they termed as systematic abuse of power and harassment by some senators is fully addressed.

The governors claimed that accountability hearings—meant to safeguard public funds—have increasingly turned into “witch-hunts and money-making avenues”, with some senators allegedly using the process to settle political scores or solicit bribes.“We support accountability, but we will not submit ourselves to harassment and extortion disguised as oversight,” one governor said, warning that counties are being unfairly targeted. The county leaders argued that the continued summons, late-night hearings, and repeated questioning on the same audit issues have paralysed county operations and undermined the spirit of devolution.

They further demanded clear rules of engagement, mutual respect between the two arms of government, and an end to what they described as public shaming of governors for political gain. The standoff now sets the stage for a potential constitutional crisis, with observers warning that a prolonged boycott could disrupt the Senate’s oversight role and escalate tensions between national and county governments.

Governors said consultations are ongoing and insisted they will maintain their hardline stance until the matter is conclusively resolved.
