NAIROBI, Kenya — Fresh debate has emerged within Kenya’s opposition politics after competing statements about the 2027 presidential ticket of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) raised questions about the party’s preferred candidate.
DCP Secretary-General Cleophas Malala previously claimed that he and party leader Rigathi Gachagua had agreed to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Malala made the remarks on Sunday, October 25, 2026, saying the party was seeking support from other opposition leaders, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, to build consensus around Sifuna’s candidacy.
However, the reported declaration that Gachagua himself is DCP’s presidential candidate introduces a conflicting position that requires clarification from the party’s leadership.
The competing claims have put the spotlight on whether DCP is pursuing Gachagua’s presidential ambitions, backing Sifuna, or exploring a broader opposition arrangement in which the final candidate would be selected through consultations.
Opposition unity faces a test
The debate comes days after Gachagua hosted Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on October 20.
The meeting fuelled speculation about a possible political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections, although the opposition had not formally settled on a joint presidential candidate in the reports available on October 25.
Malala’s remarks also came amid efforts to engage Kalonzo in discussions about Sifuna’s possible candidacy. Wiper, however, disputed Malala’s account of the proposed political engagement and criticised the way the initiative had been presented.
Who will carry the 2027 ticket?
The latest claims leave key questions unanswered: Has DCP formally endorsed Gachagua, is the party supporting Sifuna, or are its leaders still negotiating a joint opposition ticket?
A formal statement from DCP clarifying its official position would help distinguish the party’s confirmed decision from individual leaders’ declarations.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, the presidential ticket question is likely to remain a central issue in negotiations among opposition leaders seeking a common political platform.
