Parliament Cheers While Kenya Bleeds, Otieno Blasts MPs Over Loyalty Chants

By Jeff Kizzilah

Safina Party Deputy Leader-Designate Willis Otieno has sharply criticised Members of Parliament for chanting “Tutam! Tutam!” in support of the executive, describing the display as tone-deaf amid w

orsening economic conditions.

In a post on X dated February 7, 2026, Otieno linked the loyalty chants to Parliament’s failure to exercise its constitutional oversight, arguing that lawmakers are prioritizing political loyalty over the urgent needs of Kenyans.

“While MPs chant Tutam! Tutam!, hospitals lack essential medicines, mothers are detained over unpaid bills, youth unemployment explodes, and our economy bleeds from every artery,” Otieno wrote.

He painted a grim picture of the country’s social and economic challenges, citing strained public services, rising household pressures, and heavy taxation as evidence that Parliament is failing its oversight mandate.

Otieno’s statements have ignited debate on the role of MPs in holding the executive accountable, with critics warning that political theatre should not overshadow urgent national crises
