NEW YORK, September 24, 2026 — President William Ruto attended the WNBA game between the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday, showing his support for Kenyan-born basketball star Madina Okot.

Ruto, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, sat courtside alongside First Lady Rachel Ruto, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum and representatives of NBA Africa.

The Atlanta Dream defeated the New York Liberty 83–65, with Okot featuring for Atlanta. The Kenyan-born rookie played just over two minutes and recorded one rebound.

Speaking after the game, Okot described Ruto’s attendance as a great honour and said his presence demonstrated support for sports in Kenya. She also expressed hope that the moment would help create more opportunities for girls pursuing basketball and other sports.

Ruto had previously celebrated Okot after she was selected 13th overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

The President’s appearance in Brooklyn highlights the growing international profile of Kenyan athletes competing at the highest levels of professional sport.
