Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has weighed in on former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s remarks regarding the 2022 presidential election, pushing back against suggestions that Uhuru had the power to determine who won the contest.
Kalonzo emphasized that Uhuru Kenyatta was not the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and therefore did not have the constitutional mandate to declare the presidential winner.

“If Uhuru was the chairman of IEBC, he would have announced Raila Odinga as the fifth President of Kenya,” Kalonzo said, according to the remarks cited.

The comments revive the longstanding debate surrounding the 2022 presidential election, which was won by William Ruto after the IEBC declared him the President-elect. Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka challenged the outcome at the Supreme Court, which subsequently upheld Ruto’s election.

Kalonzo’s remarks are likely to reignite questions over the role played by political leaders, the IEBC and other institutions during the disputed election, as Kenya continues to debate the lessons of 2022 ahead of the 2027 polls.
