Mogo has donated motorcycles and office furniture to police stations in Kisumu County to enhance police mobility and support ongoing efforts to combat motorcycle theft.

Central and Obunga police stations, alongside the Nyanza Regional Police Commander’s office, each received a motorcycle. The two police stations and the DCIO office also received office furniture, including tables and chairs.

The initiative forms part of Mogo’s broader collaboration with security agencies and boda boda operators to address motorcycle theft, including the movement of stolen motorcycles across borders into neighbouring countries such as Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Strengthening Cooperation Against Motorcycle Theft

Mogo emphasized that combating motorcycle theft requires sustained cooperation among security agencies, motorcycle owners and operators, financiers and communities. Such partnerships are essential in improving the reporting, tracking and recovery of stolen motorcycles.

According to the National Crime Research Centre’s Organised Criminal Gangs Report, 24.3 per cent of respondents nationally identified the theft of motorcycles and boda bodas among criminal activities associated with gangs. The report also found that 71.1 per cent of respondents said gangs use motorcycles and boda bodas to facilitate mobility.

The findings underscore the importance of information sharing, increased patrols, community policing and equipping security agencies with the resources needed to respond to security challenges.

Mogo Plans Nationwide Expansion

Speaking during the initiative, Branton Mutea of Mogo said the company plans to expand the programme across the country.

“We have rolled out this initiative in Kisumu and plan to take it to all 47 counties. Security officers are key partners in the fight against motorcycle theft, and we believe supporting them with mobility and other resources can strengthen their ability to respond to incidents,” said Mr. Mutea.

He noted that motorcycle theft affects families and businesses that depend on motorcycles for their livelihoods, emphasizing the need for closer collaboration between security agencies and boda boda operators.

Police Welcome Support

Peter Oburu, the Nyanza Regional Police Commander, welcomed the support, noting that improved mobility would help officers respond to incidents, conduct patrols and engage with communities.

“Fighting motorcycle theft requires partnership between the police, financial institutions, motorcycle owners and operators, and the public. We encourage members of the public and boda boda operators to share information on suspicious activities and report stolen motorcycles promptly to the relevant authorities,” said Mr. Oburu.

Supporting Motorcycle Security and Recovery

Mogo said its support to security agencies is part of broader efforts to prevent motorcycle theft and improve the recovery of stolen vehicles.

The company operates a 24-hour emergency response service through which customers can report stolen vehicles and motorcycles and seek recovery assistance. Customers can also report stolen vehicles through Mogo’s SAKA platform.

Mogo said it will continue working with police, boda boda associations and other stakeholders to strengthen motorcycle security, address the cross-border movement of stolen motorcycles and protect the livelihoods that depend on the sector.
