NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi Governor Johnston Sakaja has toured the ongoing construction of the Kahawa West Market, with the project now 70% complete as the county government moves to expand modern trading spaces across the capital.
The new market will feature 226 modern stalls and is expected to benefit approximately 350 traders, providing them with a secure, organised and dignified environment to conduct their businesses.
For years, many traders in Kahawa West have operated from temporary structures, exposing them to harsh weather conditions, including the sun and rain. The new facility is intended to provide a safer and more conducive environment for traders while supporting local economic activity.
The county government says modern markets are more than physical structures, describing them as economic centres where traders can sell their goods, earn livelihoods and grow their businesses.
Construction is also progressing on other major markets across Nairobi. South B Market is reported to be 96% complete, Maji Mazuri Market is ready, while Gikomba Phase One stands at 90% completion.
Governor Sakaja said the county will maintain the momentum on market development, with the goal of providing traders with modern, safe and dignified spaces to work and prosper.
“Opportunity. Dignity. Markets. Nairobi is at work.”
