President William Ruto has highlighted a major increase in government investment in roads, electricity and housing in Migori County, saying the region is experiencing an unprecedented infrastructure expansion.
Speaking during his development tour of Nyanza, President Ruto said the annual roads budget for Migori County has risen from less than KSh2 billion before 2022 to KSh19 billion, with the government currently undertaking the construction of 320 kilometres of new roads.
“Before 2022, the budget for roads in Migori County was less than KSh2 billion. Today, we have increased it to KSh19 billion and are building 320km of new roads,” President Ruto said.
The President also said significant progress has been made in expanding electricity access across the county.
According to Ruto, 82,000 households have been connected to electricity over the past three years, bringing electricity coverage to 82 per cent of Migori residents.
The government has allocated a further KSh2.3 billion in the current financial year to connect another 21,000 homes, as part of a broader plan to connect 100,000 households in Migori between 2023 and 2027 under the Rural Electrification Programme.
KSh28 Billion Housing and Markets Investment
Ruto also announced major investments under the Affordable Housing Programme, saying KSh28 billion has been allocated to Migori for the construction of 8,000 housing units, 19 modern markets and student hostels with a capacity of 8,000 beds.
The investments, he said, are intended to expand access to decent housing, improve trading facilities and support students through increased accommodation capacity.
32km Kanyawanga–Awendo Road Launched
The President also launched construction of the 32-kilometre Kanyawanga–Kwoyo–Madiaba–Dede–Odongo Oher–Rapogi–Awendo Road.
The project has a budget of KSh2.25 billion and is expected to improve connectivity across the area, ease the movement of people and goods, and expand access to markets and essential services.
The government says the wider infrastructure programme is aimed at improving transport networks, expanding electricity access and supporting economic activity across Migori County.
With road construction, rural electrification, housing, markets and student accommodation forming part of the investment package, the administration says Migori is being positioned for increased economic activity and improved public services.
