Former Jubilee Party Deputy National Chairman David Murathe has come to the defence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta amid growing political claims linking the retired president to the rise of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Murathe has dismissed suggestions that Uhuru is secretly sponsoring Sifuna’s political ambitions, arguing that the former President’s political engagements should not automatically be interpreted as financial backing for any particular candidate.
The debate over Uhuru’s alleged role in Sifuna’s political rise has intensified as the 2027 General Election approaches. In August, Uhuru himself appeared to address the claims after crowds cheered when he mentioned Sifuna, joking that he did not want to be labelled a political “sponsor.”
The allegations have also been raised publicly by political leaders, including COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, who claimed that Uhuru was financing Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi. Sifuna has previously denied receiving financial support from the former President.
Murathe’s latest defence is therefore likely to reignite debate over who is really behind Sifuna’s rapidly expanding political network — and whether the Nairobi senator is building an independent national movement or benefiting from powerful political networks associated with the former Jubilee administration.
With Sifuna increasingly positioning himself as a major opposition figure ahead of 2027, the question of his political backing is expected to remain one of the hottest issues in the emerging presidential contest.
