NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has stepped up preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains after inspecting several flood-prone areas across the city, including the Mombasa Road–Bunyala Junction corridor and Globe Roundabout, where drainage works are already underway.

The ongoing interventions are aimed at improving storm-water flow, easing drainage bottlenecks and reducing the risk of flooding in vulnerable parts of the capital.

The County Government says it is implementing a KSh2.4 billion multi-agency flood-mitigation programme in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

Under the programme, KSh2 billion will be dedicated to drainage and flood-mitigation works along 19 flood-prone roads, complementing the ongoing Nairobi Regeneration Programme.

The county has also activated five dedicated response teams focusing on drainage, emergency response, shelter and relief, security and traffic, and communication to ensure a coordinated response in the event of heavy rains and flooding.

Governor Sakaja urged Nairobi residents to remain calm but vigilant as the city prepares for the rainy season.

Residents have been encouraged to follow official updates, keep drainage channels and waterways clear, and cooperate with authorities to minimise the impact of flooding on homes, businesses and transport networks.

The county government says the early interventions are part of efforts to strengthen Nairobi’s preparedness and protect communities from the effects of extreme weather.
