LSK, Governors Forge Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Devolution and Rule of Law

NAIROBI, KENYA — The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Council, led by President Charles Kanjama, SC, has engaged the Council of Governors (CoG) in discussions aimed at establishing a stronger institutional partnership to promote effective devolution, access to justice and the rule of law in Kenya.

The engagement focused on a proposed framework that would provide a structured and mutually accountable mechanism for collaboration between the two institutions.

Key proposals include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between LSK and CoG, the establishment of a Joint Technical Committee comprising representatives from both institutions, and bi-annual high-level review meetings between the CoG Chairperson and the LSK President.

The proposed framework also provides for a joint communication protocol on shared positions and dedicated budgetary provisions by both institutions to support agreed collaborative activities.

LSK Deputy CEO Ruth Nyaberi also attended the engagement.

The partnership is expected to provide a more coordinated platform for addressing legal and governance issues affecting Kenya’s devolved system, while promoting institutional accountability and strengthening access to justice.

The engagement marks an important step towards building a structured, strategic and sustainable relationship between the legal profession and county governments in support of constitutional governance and effective service delivery.

LSK and CoG are expected to continue consultations as they work towards formalising the proposed framework.
