NPA Demands Public Apology from TSC CEO Over Remarks to Parents
By Jeff Kizzilah Digital EditorThe National Parents Association (NPA) has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Evelyn Mittey, to issue a public apology over remarks the association says unfairly portrayed parents as problematic stakeholders in Kenya’s education sector.
In a detailed statement, the NPA said it values its long-standing partnership with TSC but expressed concern that addressing parents through media statements instead of established consultation channels risks damaging the collaborative relationship between parents and teachers.
The association argued that parents are central stakeholders in education, emphasizing their role in raising learners, supporting schools, and contributing to the financing of the education system through taxes.NPA maintained that concerns involving parents should be addressed
through formal engagement with the association rather than public warnings.
The association further stated that learner discipline is primarily a professional responsibility entrusted to trained teachers, while issues such as school fees fall under the Ministry of Education’s mandate. It also rejected claims that parents influence teacher transfers, saying there is no credible evidence to support such allegations.
NPA urged TSC to:Publicly apologize to parents over the reported remarks.
Stop issuing warnings to parents through the media.Recognize parents as equal partners in the education sector.
Use structured dialogue through the National Parents Association.
Strengthen collaboration between parents and teachers for the benefit of learners.
The association concluded by reaffirming its commitment to constructive engagement with TSC, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders, stating that “teachers and parents are partners, not opponents,” and calling for unity in advancing the best interests of every Kenyan child.
