The Conservator of Forests, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, has called for stronger community participation, visionary leadership, and increased investment in the forestry sector as Kenya intensifies efforts to achieve its ambitious target of 30 percent national tree cover.
Speaking during a forestry event, Lemarkoko emphasized that sustainable forest management is now at the heart of Kenya’s development agenda, playing a critical role in environmental conservation, climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and economic growth.

He noted that restoring and protecting forests requires a collective effort involving national and county governments, local communities, development partners, the private sector, and young people.
Lemarkoko further observed that expanding tree cover will not only help mitigate the effects of climate change but also improve water catchments, protect wildlife habitats, create green jobs, and strengthen livelihoods for millions of Kenyans.
He urged all stakeholders to embrace tree planting and sustainable forest management as a national responsibility, stressing that achieving the country’s environmental goals will depend on active public participation and long-term investment in conservation initiatives.
The remarks come as Kenya continues implementing its national campaign to grow 15 billion trees by 2032, a flagship initiative aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and enhancing environmental sustainability.
