Kenya Marks World Population Day 2026 with Bold Call to Invest in Youth as the Key to the Nation’s Future

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya has joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Population Day 2026, with government leaders, development partners, and youth representatives calling for increased investment in young people as the foundation for sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
The high-level forum, organized by the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), focused on the theme “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people today and for the future.” The event underscored the importance of placing young people at the center of national development through targeted investments in education, healthcare, skills development, employment, innovation, and the protection of their rights.
The celebrations were presided over by Dr. Masini Ichwara, Director General in the State Department for Economic Planning, who served as the Chief Guest. Also in attendance were NCPD Board Chairman Hon. Ali Wario, Acting NCPD Director General Ms. Lucy Kimondo, and UNFPA Kenya Officer-in-Charge and Head of Country Office Mr. Innocent Modisaotsile, alongside government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, and youth leaders.
Speakers emphasized that Kenya’s growing youthful population presents a significant opportunity to accelerate economic transformation if supported through sound policies and strategic investments.
They noted that empowering young people with quality education, accessible healthcare, decent employment opportunities, digital innovation, and meaningful participation in decision-making will enable the country to fully harness its demographic dividend.
“The future of Kenya depends on how well we invest in our young people today. By prioritizing their health, education, opportunities, and rights, we can build a more inclusive, productive, and prosperous society for generations to come,” stakeholders observed during the event.
The forum also explored emerging population trends, youth engagement in governance, and the partnerships required to fast-track the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
World Population Day, observed annually on July 11, raises awareness of global population issues and promotes policies that improve people’s well-being while fostering equitable and sustainable development.
As Kenya continues to navigate evolving population dynamics, the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) reaffirmed its commitment to advancing evidence-based population policies, strengthening partnerships, and creating an enabling environment where every young Kenyan can realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
