The Kenyan Government has intensified efforts to evacuate its citizens from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks that have left hundreds of foreign nationals fearing for their safety.
According to the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, nearly 240 Kenyans have requested evacuation assistance from the Kenyan High Commission in Pretoria after renewed anti-foreigner violence spread across parts of South Africa. The evacuation exercise targets those who voluntarily sought to return home because of growing security concerns.
The Ministry said it is working closely with the Kenyan High Commission and South African authorities to ensure the safe return of affected citizens while continuing to monitor the situation on the ground.
The government has also appealed to the South African Government to guarantee the safety and protection of Kenyans who remain in the country.
The latest unrest has reignited concerns over recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals have faced intimidation, attacks, and the looting of businesses. Several African countries have also taken steps to repatriate their citizens amid the escalating tensions.
The Kenyan Government has assured affected families that it will continue providing consular support and humanitarian assistance until all citizens wishing to return home are safely evacuated.
