Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon over his remarks warning that the Ol Kalou by-election could be called off due to alleged electoral malpractice.
Speaking during press conference Gachagua urged the IEBC Chair to stop what he termed as “being a cry baby” and instead take decisive action against individuals accused of engaging in voter bribery and other electoral offences.
Gachagua argued that the electoral commission is fully aware of those allegedly violating election laws and should use its constitutional mandate to investigate, arrest, and prosecute the culprits rather than issuing public threats to suspend or cancel the by-election.
His remarks come a day after the IEBC Chair warned that the commission could halt the Ol Kalou by-election if cases of voter bribery, intimidation, and other illegal activities continued.
According to Gachagua, safeguarding the integrity of the election requires firm enforcement of the law against offenders rather than actions that could deny residents of Ol Kalou their democratic right to elect their leader.
The exchange has intensified political tensions ahead of the by-election, with rival camps trading accusations over alleged electoral misconduct while attention remains focused on the IEBC’s handling of the process.
