By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Editor Eric Omondi Unveils 'Punguza Mzigo' Campaign, Proposes Sweeping Constitutional Changes Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has unveiled a bold constitutional reform proposal aimed at significantly reducing the cost of governance in Kenya through a nationwide referendum ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking under the #PunguzaMzigo campaign, Omondi announced that he intends to collect 500,000 signatures to initiate a referendum seeking major changes to the country's governance structure.
Among the key proposals is the reduction of Kenya’s 47 counties to eight regional administrative units, a move he says would eliminate duplication of functions and reduce public expenditure.
Omondi also proposed the abolition of the Senate, Woman Representative positions, and nominated seats, arguing that the offices have become an unnecessary financial burden on taxpayers.
He stated that the referendum should be conducted alongside the 2027 General Election to minimize additional costs associated with holding a separate vote.
According to Omondi, the proposed reforms are intended to create a leaner, more efficient government while redirecting billions of shillings saved toward development, job creation, healthcare, education, and other essential public services.
The campaign, popularized under the slogans #PunguzaMzigo and #PundaAmechoka, is expected to spark national debate on constitutional reforms, the structure of devolved government, and the cost of governance in Kenya.
Should the campaign secure the required constitutional threshold of public support, the proposals could pave the way for one of Kenya’s most significant governance reform initiatives in recent years.
