By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Prof. Laban Ayiro Calls for Character-Driven Education to Build a Globally Competitive and Prosperous Kenya Speaking during the 100th Year Celebration of the Kenya School of Government (KSG) on public service excellence, Laban Ayiro emphasized that Kenya's journey toward becoming a globally competitive and prosperous nation must be anchored on quality education, strong character formation, and values-based leadership.
Prof. Ayiro noted that education should go beyond academic achievement by nurturing responsible, ethical, and collaborative citizens capable of living and working harmoniously with others.
He stressed the importance of avoiding a mismatch between education and the real needs of society by equipping learners with practical skills, integrity, and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
He highlighted that success in the modern era is driven not only by IQ (Intelligence Quotient) but also by VQ (Values Quotient) and digital intelligence. According to Prof. Ayiro, character remains the foundation upon which knowledge and innovation can positively transform society.
“Our education must be driven by character. Knowledge and technology are important, but without values, they cannot build a better nation,” he said.
Drawing from his 37 years of distinguished service in Kenya’s university sector, during which he has championed academic excellence and represented Kenyan universities in various capacities, Prof. Ayiro urged education stakeholders and public institutions to prioritize integrity, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
He concluded that a nation that invests in character formation alongside academic excellence will produce leaders and citizens capable of driving sustainable development, strengthening public service, and improving the quality of life for all Kenyans.
