The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the constitutional right of all Kenyans to assemble and demonstrate peacefully, while warning that any attempts to exploit protests for criminal activities will be met with firm legal action.
Speaking on the matter, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that the government respects the rights of citizens to hold peaceful gatherings at any time and for any lawful reason as guaranteed by the Constitution.
However, the CS cautioned that individuals or groups seeking to infiltrate legitimate protests to cause disorder, loot businesses, destroy property, disrupt economic activities, or engage in any other criminal acts will face decisive action from security agencies.
“The Government respects the constitutional rights of all Kenyans to peaceably assemble for whatever reason, on any day, any time. Any individuals or groups seeking to exploit legitimate protests to cause chaos, engage in looting, destroy property, disrupt businesses, or commit any other criminal acts will, however, be dealt with decisively, and in accordance with the law,” Murkomen said.
The remarks come amid heightened security preparations ahead of planned demonstrations and public gatherings across the country. The government has urged participants to remain peaceful and law-abiding while exercising their democratic rights.
Security agencies have been directed to facilitate peaceful assemblies while ensuring public safety, protection of property, and uninterrupted business operations.
