The Kakamega County Government has announced plans to establish two Ebola quarantine centres, becoming the first county in Kenya to take such a proactive step in preparedness against a potential Ebola outbreak.
Speaking on the county’s preparedness measures, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said the decision was informed by the county’s strategic location as a major transit corridor connecting Busia, Bungoma, and Eldoret.
“We agreed to set up two Ebola quarantine centres in Kakamega County because it is a transit area along Busia, Bungoma and Eldoret,” Governor Barasa stated.
The governor emphasized that the county administration is working closely with the national government, public health officials, and healthcare stakeholders to strengthen disease surveillance, emergency response systems, and public awareness campaigns.
The establishment of the quarantine centres is expected to enhance early detection, isolation, and management of suspected Ebola cases, helping to protect residents and travelers passing through the region.
Health officials have assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, urging residents to remain vigilant, observe public health guidelines, and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility. The move positions Kakamega County at the forefront of public health preparedness, setting an example for other counties in strengthening preventive measures against emerging health threats.
