The Government has reiterated its unwavering support for the families and students affected by the devastating fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students and one parent, while leaving several others injured.
In an update issued by Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, CBS, the Government expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as one of the nation’s most painful moments.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the bereaved families and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community during this difficult period of grief and mourning,” said Dr. Mwaura.
The Government dismissed reports suggesting that commitments made to the affected families had not been honored, affirming that both the National and County Governments remain fully dedicated to fulfilling all promises through the required administrative and legal processes.
Since the incident, several interventions have already been undertaken, including the airlifting and transfer of injured students from St. Joseph Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment. The Government has committed to settling all medical bills incurred at both facilities.
Additionally, each bereaved family, including that of the parent who tragically lost her life while coming to pick her child, will receive KSh 200,000 in support.
The Government has also pledged to cater for funeral-related expenses, including mortuary charges, coffins, transportation of the deceased, and arrangements for a requiem mass to be held at Utumishi Girls Academy on a date that will be communicated later.
A multi-agency team led by the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) continues to coordinate support for affected families and oversee the implementation of the Government’s interventions.
Dr. Mwaura emphasized that the nation’s immediate focus remains on supporting grieving families, facilitating the recovery of the injured, and ensuring dignified final rites for those who lost their lives.
“The Government remains steadfast in walking with the affected families throughout this difficult journey and will continue providing all necessary support as they come to terms with this devastating loss,” he stated.
As the country mourns the victims, Kenyans have been urged to unite in compassion and solidarity with the affected families.
