Fresh allegations of exploitation and intimidation have emerged from Kitale Medium Prison, where junior prison officers claim they have not received payments for security services rendered at Affordable Housing project sites despite claims that the money was already released.
According to officers familiar with the matter, the contractor responsible for the housing project reportedly disbursed the funds to the Officer in Charge (OIC) for onward payment to officers who had been assigned extra security duties. However, weeks later, many junior officers say they are yet to receive any compensation for the assignments.
The officers allege that attempts to seek clarification regarding the delayed payments have been met with hostility and intimidation from senior leadership. Some claim they have been threatened with transfers to hardship stations should they continue demanding accountability.
The matter has reportedly created fear and frustration within the institution, with many officers now choosing silence to avoid victimization. Others have allegedly refused to continue participating in the extra security assignments, arguing that they are being exploited despite risking their safety during the operations.
“This has greatly affected morale among the officers. People are suffering silently because they fear the consequences of speaking out,” one source said.
The allegations now raise serious questions about transparency and accountability in the handling of welfare and operational funds meant for junior officers. Concerns are also growing over the use of transfers and intimidation as tools to silence legitimate grievances within the service.
Affected officers are now calling for urgent investigations into the alleged disappearance of the funds and protection for whistleblowers who may come forward with information regarding the matter.
The claims come at a time when prison officers across the country continue to demand better working conditions, fair treatment, and improved welfare support within correctional facilities.
