Kenyan-born CNN journalist Larry Madowo has been named the Human Rights Defender of the Year by Defenders Coalition in recognition of his continued commitment to highlighting human rights issues and amplifying underreported stories from around the world.
The award, which comes with a cash prize of $1,000 (approximately Ksh129,000), has been dedicated in full to support the next generation of journalists in Kenya.
In his acceptance, Madowo expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying “Ahsante sana,” and announced that the entire prize money will be donated to a young journalist in Kenya who actively reports on issues affecting their community.
He emphasized the importance of empowering grassroots journalism, noting that local storytellers play a critical role in exposing challenges, informing the public, and driving accountability.
The initiative is expected to inspire upcoming journalists across the country, particularly those working in under-resourced environments, to continue telling impactful community stories.
