Ruto Proposes Tax Relief for Low-Income Earners in Major Economic Shift

President William Ruto has announced plans to shield low-income earners from taxation in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on struggling Kenyans amid the rising cost of living.

Speaking during a public engagement, the Head of State revealed that he has already submitted a proposal to the National Treasury seeking tax exemptions for workers earning Ksh30,000 and below.

“I sent a proposal to the Treasury to look at how we can remove taxes especially on the low-income earners. Those earning Ksh30,000 and less will not pay any taxes!” said President Ruto.

The proposal, if approved and implemented, is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of workers across the country, particularly those in the informal and lower-income sectors who have been grappling with economic hardships.

Ruto noted that the government remains committed to protecting vulnerable Kenyans while also pursuing broader economic reforms aimed at improving livelihoods and increasing disposable income for ordinary citizens.

The announcement is likely to spark national debate on tax reforms, public revenue collection, and the government’s strategy to balance economic growth with social protection measures.

Kenyans have in recent months raised concerns over high taxation and the increasing cost of basic commodities, with many calling on the government to introduce policies that cushion households from financial pressure.

The Treasury is expected to review the proposal as part of ongoing discussions on fiscal policy and future budget planning.
