The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has noted with grave concern recent utterances by certain political actors alleging that they intend to influence the 2027 Presidential Election through extra-legal and unlawful mechanisms.

The Commission strongly condemns these statements, describing them as reckless, misleading, and entirely baseless. IEBC warns that such claims risk undermining public confidence in Kenya’s democratic and electoral processes.

“These utterances are clearly intended to instill fear, mislead the public, and erode confidence in the integrity of the electoral system,” the Commission stated. IEBC further urges Kenyans to disregard, dissociate from, and refrain from amplifying such narratives.

While firmly dismissing the allegations, the Commission has also clarified the current legal framework governing electoral conduct. IEBC noted that the Electoral Code of Conduct as prescribed under Article 84 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, read together with Section 110 of the Elections Act, is not presently operational, as its enforcement is activated during an official election period when the Commission assumes jurisdiction under the Code.

This legal position has previously been affirmed by the Supreme Court in Hon. Sabina Chege v IEBC Supreme Court Petition No. 23 (E026) of 2022.

The Commission further emphasized that no elections have been declared, and there is currently no official publication or gazettement of the 2027 General Election to justify the circulation of premature political claims or speculation.

IEBC reaffirmed its constitutional mandate and commitment to safeguarding its independence, impartiality, and credibility. The Commission assured the public and all stakeholders that it will continue to uphold the highest standards in managing electoral processes in accordance with the Constitution, national laws, and international best practices.

IEBC concluded by reiterating its dedication to delivering a free, fair, and credible 2027 General Election that reflects the will of the people of Kenya.
