Ruto Unveils Multi-Billion Nairobi Upgrade as Kenya Strengthens UN Global South Headquarters

President has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to global diplomacy and international cooperation following the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Assembly Hall in Gigiri and the inauguration of a new UN office block alongside .
Speaking during the historic event in Nairobi, President Ruto said the modernization and expansion of the UN Office at Nairobi reflects inclusivity, geographical balance, and the universality of the United Nations system, positioning Kenya at the center of global diplomacy in the Global South.
The President announced that the Government of Kenya is investing approximately $1.1 billion in complementary infrastructure projects aimed at supporting the expanding UN presence in Nairobi. The projects include major road upgrades, improved street lighting, regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers, enhancement of ICT systems security, and the operationalization of the UN One-Stop Shop.
President Ruto noted that the investment underscores Nairobi’s growing importance as the UN headquarters in the Global South and strengthens Kenya’s reputation as a trusted center for international cooperation, diplomacy, and multilateral engagement.
He further revealed that the government is modernizing the Convention Complex to elevate Kenya’s capacity to host international conferences and global events, reinforcing Nairobi’s status as a leading diplomatic and conferencing destination in Africa.
The groundbreaking ceremony and inauguration of the new facilities mark a significant milestone in Kenya’s partnership with the United Nations and signal renewed confidence in Nairobi as a strategic hub for global governance and sustainable development initiatives.
