Inspector Mwala Sues Awinja and Coca-Cola Over KSh 163M Campaign in Explosive Brand Rights Disputes
By News Desk
A high-stakes legal battle has emerged in Kenya’s entertainment and advertising industry after popular comedian , widely known as Inspector Mwala, filed a lawsuit against actress and beverage giant over a KSh 163 million promotional campaign dubbed “Kachingching na Coke.”
Through his legal team, Mwabili alleges that the campaign unlawfully utilized elements derived from his copyrighted creative work, including the use of the name “Mwala” and popular phrases such as “ka-mwala.” He argues that these references have caused widespread public confusion, leading many to believe he was directly involved in or had endorsed the campaign.
The comedian, whose brand has been built over a span of more than 25 years across television, radio, and live performances, claims that his intellectual property and personal brand were commercially exploited without consent. According to court filings, Mwabili maintains that exclusive rights to the “Mwala” name remain legally protected until 2030.
He further points to the rapid viral spread of the campaign across social media platforms, amplified by influencers and consumers, as evidence of the scale of the alleged infringement and its commercial impact.
Mwabili is now seeking compensation, damages, and legal redress, setting the stage for what could become a landmark case in Kenya regarding intellectual property rights, celebrity branding, and commercial endorsements.
The case is expected to draw significant public and industry attention, particularly as it raises critical questions about the use of creative content and identity in advertising campaigns.
