DEGAZETTEMENT OF CAPITAL HILL POLICE STATION SPARKS LEGAL SHOWDOWN

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced urgent legal action to challenge and block the proposed degazettement of Capital Hill Police Station, citing serious threats to public safety, justice, and national security.

Invoking Articles 22, 23, 10, 247, and 258 of the Constitution of Kenya, Sonko revealed that he has instructed his legal team to move to court immediately to stop the move, warning that it could severely compromise the security of Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.

“Upper Hill is not just any location—it is a critical nerve center of our nation,” Sonko stated.

The area hosts key national institutions including the Milimani Law Courts, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kenyatta National Hospital, and The Nairobi Hospital.

Upper Hill is also home to major financial institutions such as Equity Bank, KCB Group, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, NCBA Group, and Gulf African Bank, alongside leading insurance firms including Britam Holdings, CIC Insurance Group, UAP Old Mutual Group, Jubilee Holdings, and AAR Healthcare.

The area further hosts international hotels such as Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi Upper Hill and Silver Springs Hotel Nairobi, as well as critical government institutions like the Teachers Service Commission, National Transport and Safety Authority, National Lands Commission, and multiple ministry headquarters.

Sonko emphasized that the police station is not only vital for maintaining law and order but also plays a central role in ongoing legal proceedings. He cited specific cases, including ACC No. 1 of 2020 and another active investigation reported under OB No. 02/17/01/2026, both tied to records held at the station.

He warned that any attempt to remove or weaken the facility could interfere with judicial processes and jeopardize access to crucial evidence and witnesses.

“We cannot and will not allow the security of Upper Hill to be compromised. Weakening security in such a strategic area is not just reckless—it is a grave risk to lives, critical institutions, and the economic stability of our country,” he declared.

Sonko called on authorities to reconsider the move and urged Kenyans to remain vigilant in defending key public institutions.

“We must stand firm. We must protect our people. We must defend our institutions—at all costs.”
