Deadly Rains Ravage Kenya: 73 Dead, Thousands Displaced, Infrastructure Devastated
By Jeff Kizzilah
According to a multi-agency response on the ongoing heavy rains, 73 deaths have been recorded, 4 people injured, and 13,795 households displaced, affecting a total of 66,568 people across the country, Government Spokesperson Issac Mwaura reported.
Government stakeholders, including the Kenya Coast Guard Service in collaboration with the Red Cross, confirmed that Western Kenya, particularly Migori County and parts of Homa Bay County, have suffered extensive damage, with over 2,000 acres of crops destroyed and major road infrastructure damaged.
In Nairobi, the collapse of a multi-storey building at Brookside, Westlands left several people trapped. Rescue teams have since evacuated the injured and cleared those trapped inside.
Authorities have urged citizens to:
Evacuate to higher ground if water levels continue to rise.
Report power issues immediately via KPLC hotline 95551.
Boil or treat water before drinking.
Avoid flooded roads and rivers.
The public is further advised to rely on updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department for real-time weather information and safety guidance.
The government continues to coordinate relief efforts to support affected families and restore critical infrastructure.
