“Cancer Patients Left to Suffer as KNH Machine Breaks Down—Government Fixated on Nairobi Hospital Wars”

A growing healthcare crisis is unfolding at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where the radiotherapy machine has reportedly been non-functional for over three months, leaving cancer patients stranded, vulnerable, and without life-saving treatment.

Patients who depend on timely radiotherapy sessions are now missing critical appointments, with many forced to wait indefinitely as their conditions worsen. Families and caregivers have expressed deep frustration, describing overcrowded waiting areas filled with patients whose health continues to deteriorate by the day.

The prolonged breakdown has exposed serious gaps in Kenya’s public healthcare system, particularly in the management and maintenance of essential medical equipment. For many affected patients, seeking treatment elsewhere is not an option due to the high cost of care in private facilities.

This comes at a time when national attention has been heavily drawn to boardroom disputes and management wrangles at The Nairobi Hospital—a private institution that remains financially out of reach for the majority of Kenyans relying on public healthcare.

Health advocates are now questioning the government’s priorities, arguing that urgent intervention is needed at KNH to restore critical services and prevent further loss of life. They warn that continued delays risk turning an already dire situation into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.

Calls are mounting for immediate government action to repair the radiotherapy machine, ensure continuity of cancer treatment, and refocus national healthcare priorities on accessible and equitable services for all Kenyans.
