Senator Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga) has sounded the alarm over the worsening condition of Wilson Airport, calling it a matter of national concern.
Rising pursuant to Standing Order 53(1), Senator Osotsi formally requested a statement from the Senate Committee on Roads, Transport, and Housing regarding the state of the airportβs infrastructure. He highlighted critical areas including the runway, drainage systems, air traffic control systems, rescue and firefighting equipment, and power backup installations, urging the responsible authorities to take urgent remedial action.
Senator Osotsi also raised concerns over buildings and other developments near the airport that exceed the approved height limits, warning that they pose serious risks to aviation safety. He asked for timelines within which such structures would be demolished to secure flight paths.
In addition, the Senator sought details on recent aviation incidents around Wilson Airport, requesting the Committee to share findings and measures aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future.
βWilson Airport is Kenyaβs oldest and third busiest airport. Its current state raises serious questions about safety, modernization, and our ability to meet international aviation standards,β Senator Osotsi stated.
The ODM lawmaker also urged the Government to present plans for upgrading, expanding, and modernizing Wilson Airport to enhance operational capacity, improve safety, and secure Kenyaβs position as a regional aviation hub.
