Only 216,000 Registered! Kenya Faces Voter Registration Disaster

IEBC Warns of Wasted Ksh 1.1 Billion Amid Poor Voter Registration Turnout

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has raised serious concerns over the ongoing countywide voter registration drive, revealing that only 216,000 new voters have been registered so far against a national target of 6 million.

The Commission warns that if this slow pace continues, the Ksh 1.1 billion budgeted for voter registration may be largely wasted.

IEBC officials urge citizens, especially the youth, to register promptly to ensure their participation in upcoming elections.

“The numbers we are seeing are alarming,” said an IEBC spokesperson. “If we do not reverse this trend, the funds allocated for voter registration will not yield the intended impact on Kenya’s democratic process.”

The voter registration drive, which targets both first-time voters and updates to existing voter details, is critical for ensuring a credible, transparent, and inclusive election.

Citizens are encouraged to visit their nearest registration centers or use the online platform to avoid missing out on this crucial democratic exercise.
