NAIROBI, Kenya | Friday, 23 October 2026
Kenya has recorded nine confirmed cases of Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD), including one death, as the government intensifies efforts to contain the outbreak.
Eight patients are currently receiving treatment, while all 135 contacts linked to the initial case have been traced, according to an update from the National Ebola Taskforce.
The encouraging development comes as 14 samples collected from alerts reported across the country over the past 24 hours tested negative. Authorities also reported no evidence of community transmission.
The update was issued following the eighth meeting of the National Ebola Taskforce, chaired by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, which reviewed progress and identified priority areas for strengthening Kenya’s response.
Surveillance and Preparedness Intensified
During the meeting, the Taskforce reviewed disease surveillance, case management, isolation facilities, essential medical supplies and resource mobilisation to sustain containment efforts.
Enhanced screening and monitoring remain ongoing as health authorities continue tracking contacts and responding to suspected cases.
The government also announced that the first eligible contacts are expected to complete their mandatory 21-day monitoring period and return home from Sunday, 25 October.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
PS Mary Muthoni reiterated the government’s commitment to containing Bundibugyo Virus Disease through a coordinated whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
The latest update offers encouraging signs in contact tracing and surveillance, although health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Members of the public are encouraged to follow official Ministry of Health guidance and promptly report symptoms or suspected exposure to health authorities.
