Uhuru Park in Nairobi came alive on Friday evening as hundreds of Kenyans gathered to honour the late former Prime Minister and former ODM leader Raila Amolo Odinga, as the country began commemorations marking one year since his death.

The candle-lighting ceremony, held as part of the month-long “Mwezi wa Baba” programme, brought together Raila’s supporters, political allies, members of the public and entertainers who gathered to celebrate his life, political journey and contribution to Kenya.

Activities at Uhuru Park began at 3pm, with music and performances preceding the candle-lighting ceremony at 6pm. Attendees carried candles, flowers and portraits of the late opposition leader as they paid tribute to his memory.

The nationwide candle-lighting was held simultaneously in different parts of Kenya, including Mombasa and Kisumu, with Kenyans also participating from the diaspora. The programme is expected to continue throughout October ahead of the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15, 2026.

For many of those gathered, the occasion was not only about mourning but also about remembering a political figure whose decades-long public life left a significant mark on Kenya’s political history.

As candles illuminated Uhuru Park, messages of remembrance echoed among the crowds, with Raila affectionately remembered by supporters as “Baba.”

The October commemorations will include additional memorial activities in different parts of the country, culminating in events in Bondo, where Raila was laid to rest.

Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving medical treatment in India. His first anniversary is being marked through a series of activities celebrating his life and legacy.

One year later, the candles may fade, but for his supporters, Baba Raila remains alive in the hearts and memories of Kenyans.
