President William Ruto has outlined a major infrastructure expansion programme in Mombasa, targeting roads, ferry services and affordable housing as part of efforts to strengthen the coastal city’s role as a regional economic and logistics hub.
Ruto said the government is undertaking ambitious programmes to modernise Kenya’s road, railway, water and electricity infrastructure, creating a foundation for increased investment, trade and economic opportunities.
In Mombasa, the government is constructing 200 kilometres of roads at a cost of KSh70 billion, with the investment expected to improve connectivity and strengthen the county’s position as a regional logistics and commercial centre.
The President also inspected ongoing construction works at the Likoni Ferry passenger terminal, a major project designed to improve the movement of people and vehicles across the Likoni Channel.
According to the project plan, the new terminal will have capacity to serve approximately 4,000 vehicles and 500,000 pedestrians daily. The facility is scheduled for completion in March 2028 and will also provide designated spaces for small-scale traders.
Ruto further inspected the 1,500-unit Likoni Heights Affordable Housing Project, which forms part of the government’s wider affordable housing programme.
The projects are being presented as key components of the government’s infrastructure agenda, with the administration saying improved transport, housing and public facilities will support economic activity and create new opportunities for residents and businesses in Mombasa.
