14 YEARS LATER: NAKURU TRAUMA CENTRE FINALLY NEARS COMPLETION
By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Editor
After more than 14 years of waiting, the long-stalled Trauma Centre at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) is finally nearing completion, according to Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.
The facility was started in 2012 but was abandoned soon after, leaving Nakuru residents without a dedicated modern trauma centre for more than a decade.
According to Governor Kihika, the county government, in partnership with the National Government, has revived the project and prioritised its completion. Construction works resumed following a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya in November 2025.
Once operational, the Trauma Centre is expected to significantly strengthen emergency and critical care services in Nakuru and the wider region.
The facility will feature two operating theatres, 14 ICU beds, 12 HDU beds, a radiology centre, laboratory facilities, pre- and post-operative wards, and other specialised trauma services.
For victims of road accidents, severe burns, surgical emergencies and other life-threatening injuries, the centre is expected to provide faster access to specialised treatment when every minute counts.
The completed facility will also strengthen NCRTH’s role as a regional referral hospital and help reduce the need to transfer critically ill patients to other facilities for specialised care.
After years of delays, Nakuru residents are now waiting to see the long-promised Trauma Centre finally become operational.
