President William Ruto has announced that Kenya is ready to break ground on the proposed East Africa refinery in Lamu, describing the project as a transformative investment expected to strengthen regional energy security and accelerate industrialisation.
Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, President Ruto said the project would deepen local value addition, create employment opportunities and unlock new economic prospects for Kenya and the wider East African region.
The President held discussions with Dangote Industries President and CEO Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) CEO Samaila Zubairu on the financing arrangements and final preparations required to commence the project.
According to President Ruto, the refinery is expected to strengthen regional supply chains and position East Africa as a competitive energy and industrial hub.
The project is also expected to create opportunities across the energy and manufacturing sectors while supporting Kenya’s broader industrialisation agenda.
President Ruto said the government remains focused on moving the landmark project from planning to implementation and ensuring that it delivers tangible economic benefits to Kenyans and people across the region.
