Mombasa’s Industrial Revolution Begins: Governor Says Port City Is Ready to Manufacture, Compete and Create Jobs

Mombasa is set to undergo a major economic transformation following the signing of a landmark tripartite agreement for the development of the Mombasa Industrial Park Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The agreement was signed at State House, Nairobi, between the County Government of Mombasa, Mombasa Free Zone Limited and DP World, paving the way for the development of an industrial hub aimed at transforming Mombasa from primarily a transit and trading centre into a major manufacturing destination.
Speaking after the signing, the Governor of Mombasa said the county must move beyond being a gateway through which raw materials leave Kenya and finished products return at a premium.
“Kenyan raw materials must produce Kenyan products under Kenyan brands.”
The Governor welcomed President William Samoei Ruto’s commitments to strengthen the commercial viability of the SEZ, including the proposed reduction of electricity tariffs for companies operating within the zone to KSh10 per kilowatt-hour.
The lower energy costs are expected to reduce production expenses, attract investment and enhance Mombasa’s competitiveness as an industrial destination.
The Governor also welcomed the President’s commitment to construct a road linking the SEZ to the main trunk road, noting that efficient connectivity will be critical to linking the industrial park with the Port of Mombasa and Kenya’s wider transport network.
According to the Governor, the project represents more than the construction of an industrial park—it marks a shift in Mombasa’s economic strategy towards manufacturing, enterprise, employment creation and participation in global value chains.
The industrial park is expected to create opportunities for investors and local businesses while supporting value addition and enabling Kenya to retain more wealth from its own natural resources.
“This agreement is not simply about developing an industrial park. It is about changing Mombasa’s economic destiny—from a transit city into a centre of production, enterprise and shared prosperity,” the Governor said.
He declared that Mombasa is prepared to embrace the next phase of its economic development.
“Mombasa is ready to manufacture. Mombasa is ready to compete. Mombasa’s moment has arrived.”
