LSK Gentlemen’s Breakfast: Advocates Urged to Win in Court Without Losing at Home

Kwale, Kenya — Members of Kenya’s legal fraternity gathered at the Leisure Golf Club during the LSK Annual Conference 2026 for a candid conversation on the personal cost of professional success, focusing on modern responsibility, provision and masculine leadership.
The session, themed “Winning Cases, Losing Homes? A Conversation on Modern Responsibility, Provision & Masculine Leadership,” challenged male advocates to rethink what success and leadership mean beyond the courtroom.
Prof. Githu Muigai, SC, urged lawyers to recognize that the combative skills that make effective advocates—including relentless argument and cross-examination—can become harmful when carried into personal relationships.
He emphasized that “winning” at home cannot be measured by income, titles or professional reputation, arguing that true provision also requires presence, emotional engagement, consistency and character.
The discussion further examined changing family dynamics and the constitutional principle of equality within marriage under Article 45, with panelists noting that modern leadership increasingly calls for service, emotional intelligence, mentorship and shared responsibility rather than financial control or unquestioned authority.
The breakfast also addressed mental health and burnout within the legal profession. Dr. Evans Oloo, Consulting Psychologist, and Wandia Maina, Director of Interpersonal Health, provided professional perspectives on therapy, emotional well-being and the importance of seeking support before personal and professional pressures become overwhelming.
The session was moderated by Eric Kivuva, Chairman of the LSK Nairobi Branch.
The central message was clear: professional excellence should not come at the expense of family, relationships and personal well-being. Advocates were encouraged to bring the same discipline, preparation and commitment they apply to their cases into their personal lives.
