The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has warned that university lecturers could embark on a nationwide strike in September if the Government fails to address longstanding labour grievances affecting academic staff.
According to the union, lecturers are being pushed towards industrial action due to unresolved issues, including delayed payment of negotiated allowances, pending Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), stalled staff promotions and other outstanding employment concerns.
UASU has also maintained that lecturers should not be paid from students’ fees, arguing that the Government has a responsibility to adequately fund public universities and ensure staff salaries and allowances are paid through sustainable public financing.
The union is calling on the Ministry of Education, the National Treasury and other relevant government agencies to urgently engage with stakeholders and resolve the outstanding issues before the planned September industrial action.
UASU says that unless meaningful action is taken, teaching and learning in public universities could be significantly disrupted, affecting thousands of students across the country.
