Harambee Starlets faced a harsh introduction to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after Morocco’s attacking firepower overwhelmed Kenya in a 4-0 Group A defeat at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
The hosts took control early, using their pace and movement in the final third to put Kenya under sustained pressure. Maryame Atiq opened the scoring in the 19th minute, setting the tone for a dominant first-half display from the Atlas Lionesses.
Morocco continued to exploit spaces in the Kenyan defence and extended their advantage through Sakina Ouzraoui, who found the net nine minutes later. Ibtissam Jraidi then added two more goals, striking in the 31st minute and again shortly after the restart to complete the hosts’ commanding performance.
Kenya had moments where they threatened to disrupt Morocco’s rhythm. Tereza “Terry” Engesha came closest early on when her effort hit the crossbar in the fifth minute, offering the Starlets a glimpse of what they could create against the tournament hosts.
The visitors also showed attacking intent before the break when Valerie Nekesa sent a promising delivery into the box, although Eglay Mukhwana could not convert the chance.
Coach Beldine Odemba attempted to inject fresh energy into the team after halftime, making four changes as Mercy Airo, Shirlene Opisa, Euphrasier Shilwatso and Airin Madalina entered the match.
The changes helped Kenya increase their intensity, but Morocco’s disciplined defensive shape prevented the Starlets from turning possession into clear scoring opportunities.
Morocco managed the game effectively in the closing stages, with coach Jorge Vilda making several changes to maintain control and preserve the comfortable lead.
The result places Kenya in a challenging position in Group A, with the Starlets needing a response when they face Senegal on Thursday at the Olympic Stadium. Their final group match will come against Algeria on August 3.
Algeria began their campaign on a positive note after defeating Senegal 2-0 in the other Group A fixture. Marine Dafeur converted a first-half penalty before Melissa Bethi added a second goal late in the match, putting Algeria alongside Morocco at the top of the standings with three points each.
