Ruto Unveils Multi-Billion Youth Jobs Push, Pledges KSh80 Million Boost for Nairobi Artisans
President William Ruto has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to placing young people at the heart of Kenya’s economic transformation through expanded employment programmes, affordable housing projects, skills recognition, and direct support for artisans and mechanics.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, where he hosted more than 5,000 mechanics and artisans from Nairobi County, President Ruto outlined a comprehensive strategy aimed at creating jobs, empowering skilled workers, and strengthening the informal sector.
The President announced that 36 Affordable Housing Programme projects are currently underway in Nairobi County and are expected to deliver more than 180,000 decent housing units, while creating tens of thousands of employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth across the capital.
“We have established a range of transformative programmes to create employment opportunities for our young people across the country, ensuring that they are at the centre of our nation’s economic transformation,” President Ruto said.
To enhance productivity in the informal sector, the President announced that the Government will provide KSh80 million to support artisans and mechanics in Nairobi County with modern equipment and tools, enabling them to improve efficiency, expand their businesses, and increase their incomes.
The Head of State also highlighted the progress of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, revealing that more than 40,000 Kenyans have already registered to receive training and certification that formally recognizes their skills and experience.
He encouraged more artisans and skilled workers to enroll in the programme, noting that certification will open new opportunities for employment, business growth, and greater participation in the formal economy.
In addition, President Ruto announced that the Government is constructing modern workshops for artisans and mechanics across Nairobi to provide safe and dignified workspaces while supporting business licensing, professional standards, and enterprise formalization.
The President emphasized that the Government will continue investing in programmes that equip young people with the skills, opportunities, and resources needed to secure meaningful employment and build sustainable livelihoods.
The initiatives form part of the Kenya Kwanza Administration’s broader agenda to accelerate job creation, empower micro and small enterprises, and drive inclusive economic growth through targeted investments in youth and the informal sector.
