Government Delivers KSh 20 Million Reward to Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets Ahead of WAFCON Campaign
The Government has fulfilled President William Ruto’s pledge by releasing KSh 20 million to the Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets, providing a significant morale boost as the senior women’s national team departs for Morocco to compete in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The funds were officially handed over on Wednesday by Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, who visited the team to bid them farewell and deliver the President’s promised reward.
Addressing the players, PS Mwangi said President Ruto remains committed to supporting Kenyan sports and empowering women athletes through meaningful investment and incentives.
“The President made a promise to incentivize you with KSh 20 million. Today, I am here to fulfill that promise and wish you a successful campaign in Morocco. Go and make Kenya proud,” he said.
During the team’s visit to State House on Tuesday, President Ruto announced that Harambee Starlets would receive KSh 10 million, while Junior Starlets would also receive KSh 10 million, recognizing their achievements and encouraging continued excellence on the international stage.
The Principal Secretary reiterated that the Government is determined to strengthen women’s football as part of its broader agenda of nurturing young talent and expanding opportunities for girls across the country.
Harambee Starlets captain Mwanahalima Adam welcomed the fulfillment of the presidential pledge, describing it as a strong motivation ahead of the continental tournament.
“We are grateful that the President has kept his word. Our responsibility now is to repay that confidence by giving our best and making history for Kenya,” she said.
The send-off ceremony was attended by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed and FKF General Secretary Dennis Gicheru, who expressed confidence in the team’s readiness to compete against Africa’s top football nations.
The timely reward underscores the Government’s commitment to supporting Kenyan athletes and inspiring Harambee Starlets as they embark on their quest for continental success and national pride.
